You probably ended up here because your doctor or dietitian advised you to go on a low FODMAP diet or you found out for yourself online that it can solve your gut and stomach problems.
What is a low FODMAP diet?
This is a is a diet developed by Monash University in Australia. The diet is used to help people control symptoms of PDS (or Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
PDS is a common chronic intestinal disorder. Symptoms commonly seen in PDS are abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating and diarrhea or constipation or a combination of both.
By eating low FODMAP meals, these symptoms will go away on their own. You can then slowly reintroduce some fodmap foods into the diet to see what you react to most strongly.
What does the abbreviation FODMAP mean?
It stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols.
Fodmaps are sugars (short chain carbohydrates/sugars) that are not fully fermented in your gut. They move slowly through your small intestine and attract water.
They then move from the small intestine to the large intestine, where they are fermented by intestinal bacteria. These bacteria ferment the FODMAPs and produce gas in the process.
The excess gas and water in the intestines cause the intestines to expand.
Because people with PDS have very sensitive intestines, this causes PDS symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea / constipation.
